Statistics and methodology.

Where the numbers on this site come from, what they do and do not prove, and how we calculate any business-specific estimates.

Zero-click search: a range, not a single number

Several independent studies have measured how often a Google search ends without the searcher clicking through to a website. Depending on the study period, the panel, and the methodology, recent research places the U.S. zero-click rate somewhere in the 58 to 68 percent range, and the studies generally agree the rate has been trending upward as AI Overviews appear on more results pages.

We do not present any single figure as definitive. Different research groups measure different things: some count sessions, some count queries, some include mobile app traffic and some do not. The honest summary is a range with a clear direction of travel, which is why we describe it that way rather than quoting one headline percentage.

AI Overviews and why traditional SEO alone is no longer enough

Research from BrightEdge and similar tracking studies shows AI Overviews appearing on a large and growing share of Google searches, with significant year-over-year growth. At the same time, buyers increasingly start in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity rather than a search box.

That combination is why ranking well in traditional search results is no longer sufficient on its own. A business also needs to be understandable, verifiable, and citable by the systems generating those answers. That is the work covered by AEO and GEO, and it is what the Signature Visibility Audit measures.

Sources we reference

  • Similarweb, Zero-Click Study (2025)

Reported that a majority of U.S. Google searches ended without a click, with the share rising after AI Overviews rolled out more widely.

  • SparkToro / Datos research

Clickstream-based analysis of U.S. Google searches showing most searches ending on Google itself rather than on a publisher's website.

  • Semrush, zero-click study (2025)

Independent measurement of zero-click behavior across desktop and mobile search sessions, reporting figures in a similar range.

  • BrightEdge and comparable AI Overview research

Tracking studies showing significant year-over-year growth in how often AI Overviews appear on Google results pages.

These studies are published and updated by their authors on their own websites. Figures change as each group re-runs its analysis, so treat any number here as a point-in-time reading rather than a fixed fact.

How our business-specific estimates are calculated

Any business-specific figures used elsewhere on this site, including hours saved, revenue increase, and revenue leak estimates, are based on industry averages and internal modeling. They are illustrative estimates, not guarantees, and actual outcomes vary by business, market, starting point, and how much of a recommendation is actually implemented.

We do not guarantee search rankings, AI recommendations, revenue, or any other specific result. This page is intended to match and expand on the notice in our site footer. For the full statement, see our Disclaimer.
